Anthony Nolan is the charity that saves the lives of people with blood cancer and blood disorders.
Every 20 minutes someone in the UK is told the devastating news that they have blood cancer. For many of these people, chemotherapy and other drug treatments don’t work. But there is hope – a blood stem cell (or bone marrow) transplant can offer a potential cure and save their life.
Two thirds of patients who need a transplant cannot find a matching donor within their own family, so around 2,000 people in the UK need a stem cell (or bone marrow) transplant from a stranger each year, and that’s where Anthony Nolan comes in. Currently there are over 700,000 potential lifesavers on the register, but sadly not everyone finds the match they so desperately need. Currently, only 60% of patients will find the best possible match so a huge part of our work is to diversify the register so we will be able to provide the best match to even more people with blood cancer.
We recruit those aged 16-30 to sign up to be potential lifesavers if they come up as match for someone in need. Now, we help three people each day find that lifesaving match.
